East Terrace March 16
I just walked out on the East Terrace, at the top of the Reflecting Pool staircase, to see how spring is coming along. Today, the lavender “tommies” are almost done for the year, a short-lived but welcome cheerfulness.
The blue “phase” is right on the heels of the tommies’ exit. Blue Siberian squill and Glory-of-the-snow are starting to open on the East Terrace. As soon as the sun warms up that space, the ground should turn blue!
The March Bank is usually just a few days behind the micro-climate of the East Terrace. With today’s chilly temperature and overcast skies, the flowers on the March Bank are closed up tightly though the snowdrops are still quite lovely.
I’ll keep watch and let you know when the March Bank turns its signature blue. It is a highlight of the year in the Winterthur Garden! The blue phase always reminds me of the summer sky fallen to the ground when millions of tiny bulbs brighten the early spring landscape. Enjoy – and share your observations of the March Bank with us!
