Happy Spring! If you’ve ever seen the Winterthur Garden in late March, you may be wondering how ”the blue” is coming along on the March Bank. While the indigo hues of Glory-of-the-snow and Siberian squill are evident in the warmest spots, we are about a week away from the blanket of blue. Stay tuned!
Two events are fast approaching: the Bank to Bend lecture on April 4th and the beginning of the Wednesdays at Winterthur walks. The first W @ W is on April Fool’s Day when Michelle Stapleford will lead a walk among the Winterhazels. For a pdf of all the programs in the garden, take a look:

And speaking of birds, on Friday, March 20, Winterthur hosted the Delaware Nature Society’s birding series. The visit is featured on the DNS blog for March 21. We had a great time spotting 33 species of birds including a belted kingfisher, ring-necked ducks and a rusty blackbird.
Keep us posted Karen…I’ve got a 3-hour drive to Winterthur and really want to see “the blue”. I was there 3/21, just before your post, and can come again Friday 3/27 if it’s progressing. Do the bulbs keep opening in these chilly days?
Carolyn,
I’m going to post a few photos of the March Bank I just took at 2p on 3.25.09. The March Bank is much bluer than I expected it to be today! If the sun is out on Friday, you should see lots of blue. If it’s not so sunny, I’m not sure I’d encourage a 3-hour trip. Today, it’s bright and sunny, though chilly out, and the bulbs are full open.
Hi Carolyn, I hope you’re here today – or early next week! If you take photos, please share them on our flickr page – see the lower right corner of the blog homepage. As to whether the bulbs open on chilly days, I’d say “yes” as long as the sun is hitting them. During yesterday’s chill rain, they closed up, probably a mechanism to protect themselves.
