For avid gardeners there is so much information available to us through classes, books, magazine articles, and the web that it amounts to a surplus of data and advice. One of the best ways (and most enjoyable) to learn about gardening is to work alongside other gardeners. The tips shared from gardener to gardener and the observations made while working in a garden are invaluable and have a way of ‘filling in the gaps’ and further illuminating what you’ve just read in the latest magazine article.
With that in mind I would encourage you to find out more about volunteering in the Winterthur garden. You’ll absorb information about gardening by working alongside our staff and other volunteers. At the same time you will be helping us maintain this treasure of a garden. This spring, in addition to working in the core garden, we have a couple of new volunteer opportunities available:

Farmstand Volunteer
On Saturdays, from May to October, we will be operating a farmstand along Route 52. In May, we will feature not just produce, but also plants from local nurseries. The rest of the year we will be offering fruits and vegetables grown here at Winterthur and at other farms in the region. If you are interested in Farmers’ Markets, vegetables, local food, etc. this might be just the volunteer opportunity for you.
Schedule: Saturdays in Summer, 2-4 hours
Natural Lands Volunteer
While the Winterthur garden is an intensively maintained area at the core of the property, Winterthur garden staff members are also responsible for the care of the remaining 1,000 acres. Join our staff and other volunteers as we complete projects throughout the estate such as invasive removal and environmental restoration.
Schedule: periodically (perhaps once a month), Spring through Fall

Information Session
This Wednesday we are offering a free information session for prospective and existing volunteers. If you would like to find out about volunteering I would encourage you to join us (details below). If you would just like to drop us a line and receive some information about volunteering via e-mail or mail, please leave your contact information as a comment on this post. All comments are reviewed by me and I will make sure that your personal information does not appear on the website. Or feel free to give me a call at 302.888.4915.
