With nature hitting the fast forward button on our gardens, my thoughts have turned from enjoying our spring flowers to planting them. I like that the springtime ritual of shopping for new plants can be a bit of a treasure hunt, especially when you take advantage of local plant sales and garden events. As you might expect the Brandywine Valley offers some unique opportunities to discover that special or hard-to-find plant for your garden.
The University of Delaware Botanic Garden will be featuring witch hazels and other wonderful woody plants at their sale on April 23 and 24. They make the selection process much easier by putting together a beautiful and informative catalog.
Mark your calendar! On April 24 the Rare Plant Auction will lure gardeners out of their gardens for an evening benefit filled with rare and unusual plants, champagne, and dinner in Longwood’s conservatories.
On May 1 and 2 the Delaware Nature Society will give you the opportunity to choose from among 300 different native plants for your garden.
The Wilmington Flower Market, a local tradition since 1921, offers not just plants but also entertainment for those family members less inclined to fuss over plants. Join the fun on May 6, 7, and 8.
But don’t forget to join us here at Winterthur as we will be featuring nurseries, fruit and vegetable growers, and other farm products at our Farmstand starting May 8 and running throughout the summer. For more information, a weekly list of featured produce items, and a description of the nurseries, send us your e-mail using the form below (your information will never be shared).
