Today is “the” day to see the tommies (Crocus tomasinianus) in full bloom on the East Terrace at Winterthur. They can also be found on hillsides near the fire station and greenhouses. Their delicate purple flowers with yellow stamens are a welcome sight in early spring.
Other wonderful sights today: the butter yellow of the aconites and the linen white of snowdrops on the March Bank.
Come and enjoy! And tell me where you spot the best tommies.

It’s cool to see you all with a blog for the Winterthur Garden, and a Flickr page!
I’m bummed that my camera needs repairs, this is the time when things start to get interesting in the garden; at least in your garden. I love the succession of flowers that bloom throughout the spring.
(I used to work in PR at Winterthur, so I know that spring starts early with flowers that can handle the alternating cold and warming spells we have in the Brandywine Valley – winter aconite, snowdrops and snowflakes, Crocus tommasinianus, and chionodoxa & Siberian squills – although I can’t swear to still get the spellings right.)
Hi Cathy, Good to hear from you! Yes, you must get that camera repaired before the March Bank turns blue in a couple weeks. Thanks for your comment. Karen
Hi! My family and I just visited this past weekend when the weather was still nice and warm out. The flowers were gorgeous! I can’t wait to see the March Bank all in bloom again! =:)
Blessings!

Glad you enjoyed the Winterthur Garden, Rachel! I just went out to check on the March Bank (Monday, 3/16). The East Terrace, at the top of the Reflecting Pool staircase, is in an interesting transition from lavender to blue. About one third is still covered with Tommies while the blue Siberian Squill is opening in another third. A very exciting time of year! Happy Spring – and thanks for your comment. Karen
