Adrienne Stalek, working with estate historian Maggie Lidz this summer, writes:
Summer at Winterthur is a tour de force of subtle, unobtrusive beauty. The garden elements that might be overlooked during the riotous color of spring quietly make their way to the forefront. One such example is the wide variety of stones intentionally placed throughout the landscape. The stones at Winterthur today have the same powerful qualities that drew our earliest ancestors in both eastern and western civilizations to set them in the landscape before us.
Stones provide the sense of stability, as well as a source for contemplation that could lead some to the spiritual. The stones at Winterthur also provide the practical, like the stepping stones that allow dry crossing of Clenny Run as well as the magical, like the miniature mountain landscape that can be found atop one of the Story Stones in the Enchanted woods. I am looking forward to searching out some more.

Thanks, Adrienne! We look forward to more rocky discoveries in the Winterthur Garden!

I always love stones in the garden. They represent such stability & calmness (I always connect them with Zen garden). Thanks for sharing,
This, sadly, reminds me of Lance Armstrong, who may be stripped of his Tour de Force titles for illegal blood doping. If only he had stuck to the ancient stones of divine contemplation!
