I heard a rumor that there were snowdrops (Galanthus) blooming in the Winterthur Garden, so (tough job!) I decided to traipse into the garden yesterday afternoon to have a look. Thanks to help from Amy M., I found a strong stand of snowdrops of the December form along the stones of the upper Glade Garden. Plus a lovely single snowdrop just beyond the Box Scroll Garden at the beginning of the March Bank. Enjoyed seeing the tips of bulbs emerging from the rich soil before we’ve even made it to the winter solstice.
Come and see the first snowdrops of the season!

Snowdrops in December? Will they come up again in spring and bloom?
HF du Pont recorded in his diaries that snowdrops bloomed around January 1 on a regular basis & there is a variety called January. December 20 does seem early but this is their bloom time for this season I suppose. They won’t rebloom. It is now March 22 & the season has been absolutely beautiful for a long time. Next week – the March Bank will turn blue!
Thanks for the reminder of H.F. duPont’s marvelous garden diaries. I should do the same for my garden. Looking forward to March 27-April 3 when the March Bank should be blue!
