Winterthur Garden Intern, Charles Engleman writes:
Hello! My name is Charlie Engelman, and I’m working in Winterthur’s garden department this summer as a Garden and Estate Intern. Having lived and worked on the property for the past two months, it is easy for me to see why so many love this place. Be it the museum, the garden, or the people, there are countless aspects of the estate that can make someone catch the ‘Winterthur Bug’.
What has really inspired me, and captured my interest this summer, is Winterthur’s diverse wildlife and plant collection. Ever since my first walk through the grounds, where I found myself being dwarfed by the towering poplars and catching frogs in the reflecting pool, I have been hooked on the estate’s outdoor treasures. This is my own version of the Winterthur bug.
I decided I should take advantage of spending my summer amongst these wonderful natural elements and began planning an Internet web series surrounding my favorite aspects of outdoor life here at Winterthur. Each episode of the series, entitled “Nature Time with Charlie,” focuses on an individual component of Winterthur that I find particularly interesting.
The first episode has been completed and you can find a link at the end of this blog post. It focuses on some of my favorite animals on the property, the Green Frogs. I have found these playful amphibians hopping around behind the Visitor Center, relaxing in planters in the Reflecting Pool, swimming in Frog Hollow, and enjoying themselves in many other ponds throughout the property.
Perhaps you may notice a few other familiar sites in the video. Take a look and let me know what you think! This beautiful place has so many treasures to offer. All sorts of inspiration seem to lie behind every corner. I encourage you to explore the grounds and uncover the secrets—like the Green Frogs—that are hidden in this incredible garden. And if you spot a tall, redheaded, boy walking around the property with rain boots, a backpack, and a net in hand don’t be afraid to stop and say hello!
