What fun! The “Magic” or “Resurrection” Lillies are blooming in the Winterthur Garden this week. Look for them in several places:
- Near the Visitor Center patio
- Near the tram stop at Enchanted Woods
- Along the lower March Bank
- Near the Brown Horticulture Learning Center, along the stone wall, mixed in with hosta
I enjoy these plants when interplanted with hosta, giving the illusion that the hosta are blooming in an incredible non-hostalike way. The Latin name for these huge bulbs is Lycoris squamigera. The common names stem from its yearly routine: the big straplike leaves emerge in the spring, trap the sunshine, and disappear. Then, this time of year, a single thick step shoots up and surprising mellow pink flowers erupt, as if by magic.
