Mother Nature has a way of encouraging us to live in the moment and, at the same time, preparing us for things to come. While mulch mowing the leaves on the March Bank during the balmy temperatures of last week, I nearly mowed the first snowdrop. November 19th; this is the earliest date I ever recall seeing one in full flower. Folklore has it that HF du Pont would look for the first snowdrop to emerge between Christmas and New Year’s Day; well, this year I have him beat!
As the snowdrop indicated on that 50 degree day, the weather has changed, giving us a frigid look into the temperatures of winter. It also gives us something to look forward to as the barren woodland of an autumnal March Bank will soon emerge with the colors of winter.
