Visitors get high at Winterthur on the incredible beauty of the garden at this time of year. Don't let the opportunity to see it in person pass you by. The Quarry Garden is a miracle of engineering as well as gardening!

Greetings to Winterthur Gardens from Rofsie Estate in Scotland the Backhouse Heritage Collection of Daffodils here is looking well but late flowering due to our unusual weather conditions this year, March was unusually dry finding us watering the daffodil bulbs! We are so grateful for your kind help and assistance in helping us grow the 'Living Library' of Backhouse bred cultivars, William Backhouse ll bred N.'Emperor' and N.'Empress' these first polyploids took the daffodil world by storm, we hope this collection containing his work and the work of his children and grand children in daffodil breeding will enable the work and research of academics, historians and horticulturalists who work in the field of Narcissus. We thank you so much for your offer of assistance, you are greatly appreciated.

With Every Best Wish,
Caroline

By golly, I've got it! It's a poem by Winifred Letts, late 19th century ---- she may not have been the first to use the term, but the poem is awfully nice.

A soft day, thank God!
A wind from the south
With a honey'd mouth;
A scent of drenching leaves,
Briar and beech and lime,
White elderflower and thyme,
And the soaking grass smells sweet,
Crushed by my two bare feet,
While the rain drips,
Drips, drips, drips from the eaves.

A soft day, thank God!
The hills wear a shroud
Of silver cloud;
The web the spider weaves
Is a glittering net;
The woodland path is wet,
And the soaking earth smells sweet
Under my two bare feet,
And the rain drips,
Drips, drips, drips from the leaves.

Where did the expression - a soft day - originate? It so describes the feeling you get when you leave your home & confront complete peace in every way you could describe it - temperature, color, texture....I mean to look it up!

Sorry you had trouble finding the Davidia tree, but I'm not surprised. It's in a somewhat obscure spot, right next to the Dorrance Gallery where the Campbell's Collection of Soup Tureens is on display. It's tucked in a small area below the South staircase of the Reflecting Pool. Not in bloom yet; that usually happens in mid-May. I'll post photos here as it starts to open. Thanks for the question!
